I'm in a Bit of a Quandary Over Curtains

This whole "home decor" thing is pretty new to me. I mean, I've always decorated with little knick-knacks and such, but never really purchased curtains for my windows. I obviously need some help! We purchased some nice curtains from JC Penney home store a few months back. The kind that are energy-saving. LOVE them! But, what I don't love, is the fact that I didn't realize they wouldn't "meet in the middle" and look like they came out of House Beautiful magazine when we were done.

I don't have sheers up. I don't have valances. I think the rod looks like a blank stare. So what I do? I didn't like the matching valances, because they were a bit too frou-frou for my taste. Now that it looks so bare, I realize that I need to do something, but I am a bit clueless in the home decor department, so I need HELP! I really do want to have a "House Beautiful". I want to be like The Inspired Room when I grow up. But I am SOOOOOOOO far away from that!

Great thing is, Papa Bear has given me carte blanche basically, for decorating purposes. I just don't really know what to do, and I want to do it frugally too!

What do I do now? Any suggestions? Any and all advice will be taken with a grain of salt, but most likely, also appreciated greatly. I don't want it to look tacky!

  1. Your window is so large, you may need to double up on the curtains? I'm no designer, either, TRUST ME! But I have a large window, put the color on both sides and white sheers in the middle. (you can go to my blog and see before/after pics of the house we completely remodeled.) Maybe that helps? I have seen curtain rods that have one hardware set but two rods, so that would be great for sheers behind and curtains in front. I used a tension rod for my sheers, but it does sometimes fall.

Congrats on tackling the decor deliema! It isn't an easy one! :)

  3. Oh! I remember one B&B I went to - they used transparent streamers tied to the top of the rod hanging down - it was so pretty! :)

  4. Beth, I'm having a hard time picturing it, but maybe I can find something online that is similar. I do have sheer curtains. We'll see what happens, and I'll be sure to post whatever I come up with.

    Thanks, Ashely and Beth! :-)
