Sometimes, I get these great ideas, like starting a blog. I am overly ambitious sometimes. And then, life gets in the way. Things get a little chaotic and crazy. So much has happened in our lives since our last post!
To start things off, let me just say this: We did emergency foster care in 2011, and got a little girl who was 10 months old in October 2011. She celebrated her 1 year birthday with us and by the time she went to go live with a relative, she was 13 months old. Needless to say, having her with us for 3 months, we got attached to her. SO much so, that we cried when she left. We KNEW this was a temporary situation, but we also knew that God called us to love these little ones for as long (or as short) as we have them. We tried to guard our hearts, but about 2 weeks before she left, she really started loving back. This was so hard on our whole family, that we decided we needed to stop for awhile, and maybe for good.
BUT, last November (2012), I really felt like God was wanting us to get back into emergency foster care. UGH! What??? NO!!! Life was good. Things were getting easier. Our kids were getting older and able to do more for themselves. My selfish and lazy heart did NOT want to take on a baby or another child! Our youngest had just started preschool 2 days a week, where I actually had a couple of hours to myself!!! Oh, the bliss!
Nope! God had other plans. How do I know for sure this was what He wanted? Because Papa Bear had been thinking the same thing, and neither one of us had talked to each other about it yet! So, we put off talking about it until after the New Year. We prayed about it. Then, about the second week of January (2013), Papa Bear said, "Ok, this is what we'll do; if THEY call US and say they are DESPERATE for homes, then we'll say yes, but we're not going to call THEM." I was ok with that. They probably wouldn't call.
WRONG! Not even 2 weeks later, our caseworker called us and said, "So, are you guys ready to foster again? We are DESPERATE for homes!". Um, hello??? Could that be any more clear of an answer? We knew then and there, that this was definitely what God wanted. Sooooo, we said yes. This was on Friday, January 25th.
Monday, January 28th, we got a call about a 1 year old girl who needed a confidential placement. We had to say no on that one, for the protection of our family. I couldn't believe we even got called SO QUICKLY!!! I figured it would be a few weeks at least.
Then, Tuesday, January 29th, we got a call about a baby who was born the day before, 6 weeks early, and still in the hospital. OH, MY!!! She wasn't even a day old yet, when we got the call! Well, we said yes. We had to wait until she was 10 days old and had gained a substantial amount of weight before we could bring her home. But we visited her almost every day before we brought her home.
This prompted us to put in our application for adoption. NOTHING is saying that she will go up for adoption, but if she does, we wanted to have all of our ducks in a row, because of course, we fell in love with her immediately, despite the fatigue (and of course the sin that comes with such fatigue!!! you know, anger, impatience, etc.).
We know not where this road leads, but we know we are doing God's will and we know that He sustains us each step of the way. He cares for our every need before we even realize we have a need. He gives grace when we have none to give others. He is merciful when we are in the middle of sinning. We are praying for birth mom. We are praying for our own hearts. We know that God is in control and He is a sovereign God.
We will wait. And we will love. And we will live life to the fullest, for His glory.

A Birthday Celebration
This picture was taken on the very first day we met our baby girl.A Very Happy 2nd Birthday to our Little Princess Diva Bear.
Yesterday was actually her birthday, but today we are having her party.
We prayed for this baby, and put our application in, in August 2009 to get a baby girl to adopt through foster care. In October of 2009, we got a call from our caseworker, saying they had a baby who wasn't yet two months old (born 09-09-09, sharing her birthday with my father-in-law), whose birth mom was pretty young and in foster care herself. Would we be interested in taking the baby, knowing that she could potentially end up going back with birth mom? We said "Absolutely!". We left it in God's hands, all the while praying that we would be picked out of the 12 families who were put forth as possible families for this precious little baby.
We were leaving to go to our church's family retreat a week later, when we got a call from our caseworker. She said, "Congratulations!", and I nearly screamed! I was SO giddy and happy and excited, even though we didn't know whether or not we would get to keep her.
But we did get to keep her. Her adoption was finalized on February 14th of this year.
She is a pistol, and smart as a whip. She is tender, and is quick to say "Sorry". She randomly comes up and rubs against me like a little kitty cat and says "I love you". She is full of life, full of energy, full of spunk, full of joy. She loves her brothers. She loves books. She has a little elephant snugly named Ellie, whom she sleeps with nearly every night. She has loads and loads of curls, and she cries every time I do her hair. She asks for a bow (hairbow) every morning when she wakes up. She scrunches her nose when she smiles. She loves Apple Jacks and "salad" (tomatoes and cucumbers). She loves to be rambunctious.
We are so blessed to have this precious little girl as our daughter. We love her and pray that she will come to know God at an early age. We pray that she lives up to her name meanings: Sophia (wisdom) Grace (grace) Angela (messenger of God). We pray that she will develop a gentle and sweet spirit. We pray that she will love those around her and be always ready to tell others about Jesus. We pray that we will be the best parents we can be, always pointing her to the cross. Thank you, God, for blessing us with this little girl.

I Heart Faces Photo Challenge: Eyes
This is our little guy, whom we adopted through the county foster care system. He is such a sweet, lovable little boy, and everyone who sees him comments on how gorgeous his eyes and eyelashes are, and I HAVE to agree! For someone who has gone through as much as he did in the first couple of years of his life, his eyes are a true window to his joyful, happy soul.
This is the photo I've submitted for the I Heart Faces Photo Challenge: Eyes.

Lilliput Children's Services

I wanted to share this little bit of information with you about Lilliput Children's Services. They are the adoption agency who did our home study for the adoption of our youngest, Princess Diva Toddler Bear. We really appreciate the work that they are doing in our area, and we wanted to give them a little shout-out and help spread the word. If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, or Sacramento area, I urge you to think about fostering and/or adopting through Lilliput.
Lilliput Children's Services mission is to ensure a child's opportunity for permanence in a safe and nurturing family. Lilliput provides permanency-focused foster, adoption and kinship services to families and children in California's foster care system, foster adoptees, as well as those at risk of foster placement. Lilliput has completed nearly 5,000 adoptions for California foster children and finalizes the most foster adoptions on a yearly basis of any private foster adoption agency in the state. Lilliput's foster program is unique in that foster care is a temporary strategy to move children to permanency - either through reunification, kinship care or adoption. Children are typically served in our foster/adoption program (most are placed in only one family and adopted within approximately 11 months) or in our Kinship Support Services Program. About 50% of our foster adoptions are children adopted by their relatives; a testimony to our commitment to keep children with their families when possible. By helping children find early permanency they don't have to face aging out of foster care without a committed family.
Lilliput has 12 offices within Northern California, and a statewide adoption license. This provides us with the opportunity to touch the lives of foster children in more communities than most agencies within the state. As a commitment to our high standard of care, Lilliput is accredited through the California Alliance of Child and Family Services and is in the process of becoming nationally accredited.
We have strong partnerships with the public child welfare system throughout the state. Lilliput has proudly offered a variety of supportive kinship services through our foster, adoption and kinship programs for the past several years. Our first Kinship Support Services Program (KSSP) was launched in 2007 in partnership with the State of California and Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). In the following year we also launched the El Dorado and Napa County KSSP. Our KSSP serve family members, such as grandparents, who are caring for their grandchildren or other relative children. In 2009, Lilliput Children's Services was one of only 24 organizations nationwide awarded a federal Family Connections Discretionary Grant from the Administration on Children and Families.
The purpose of the funded project, the Kinnections Initiative (KI), is to locate and engage kin for African American youth who are entering Sacramento County foster care for the first time, but whose family members' whereabouts are unknown. The practices developed from this demonstration project will ultimately be mirrored by agencies throughout the nation. Lilliput has long been recognized throughout the state as a leading expert in kinship care best practices, and is now recognized nationally as well. Lilliput was recently selected as the Emergency Foster Care provider for Solano County Child Welfare Services. This partnership intends to reform the experience of foster children when they first enter care or are experiencing a placement disruption. This new system of care will lead to more thoughtful planning and appropriate placements for children, with greater utilization of kinship care and fewer moves.
We are currently seeking emergency foster families and homes in Vallejo, Vacaville, and Fairfield and will have the program up and running by 9/1/11. These homes are available 24-hours a day to take children in, providing a safe harbor with little or no advance notice, for a period of a few days or up to 2 weeks. Emergency foster parents will be specially trained to meet the needs of all children, including those who are medically fragile and non-ambulatory, and will accept sibling groups in order to keep them together.
Thanks for looking!

The Adoption is FINAL!
We are so blessed! Our Baby Bear's adoption was finalized in court on Monday, February 14th! What a sweet reminder of God's love toward us. We are grateful to those who have prayed for us through this journey, and to those who blessed us by coming to the adoption ceremony.
This has been our second adoption through the foster care system.
In this photo, TEN of the people from this photo were also present for Little Bear's
adoption in March of 2009, including the judge!

UPDATE on Adoption Fundraiser
Praise God! We got GOOD NEWS yesterday when we went to sign papers for the petition of adoption for Baby Bear! We have NO adoption fee to pay! Apparently, when you pay for your first adoption through the county (Little Bear was adopted through the county in March of 2009.), then you don't have to pay again...ever! At least, until the state runs out of money.
Our second bit of good news is that there is an adoption tax credit, which we knew. But what we didn't know, is that it seems that if we don't file WITH our taxes, we may be able to get the lump sum of the credit, which is a GOOD amount! This may help us get the van which we pretty desperately need.
God is SO good to us! His provision and kindness for our family is overwhelming!

Raising Money For Adoption
Baby Bear's adoption is right around the corner! We have a foster daughter, who has been with us since she was two months old. She is now 16 months old. Her adoption finalization ceremony is just about a month away. We are needing to raise $500 for the legal fees for her adoption.I am having an "Adoption Sale" in my Etsy shop, Bear River Photo Greetings, where you can find invitations and announcements for pretty much any occasion in your life. It's so easy. Just purchase, send me your photo and/or text, and I'll send you a digital file that you can upload to your favorite photo lab, to get printed. I'm offering 10% off of any item in my shop, until we have raised the money. Please use the code, ADOPTION10 when you place your order. I would love it if you would share this on Facebook and Twitter, and with all of your friends. Please feel free to share it on your own blog as well.
Just to let you know, 80% of the sales will go towards our legal fees, and the other 20% will still go to Hands at Work in Africa. That will not fall by the wayside, as we try to raise money for the adoption.
I am also having this same sale in my other Etsy shop: Blackberry Cottage Home Decor, where I sell wall art, or digital prints that you can have printed at your local photo lab, and also pillow covers.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!

Church Boy
Last night, Papa Bear and I were watching a movie with Bubba Bear, while the little ones were fast asleep. They had been down for over an hour after Little Bear woke up around 9:30 to 9:45, crying, and needing some cold medicine, due to a runny and sniffly nose. (See, I had originally put them down at about 7:30 for Baby Bear and 8:30 for Little Bear.)
Around 10:30, we heard Little Bear's voice, OVER the TV, which had the volume turned fairly high...it WAS a movie after all! I went back into the little ones' bedroom to investigate, and both of them were sitting up in bed, talking. I asked them, in a stern voice, "What are you guys talking about in here???!!!". Little Bear, who is 4, promptly answered, "God". Good answer, church boy!!! Now go to sleep!

Bibs for Adoption

I am always looking for cute bibs for Baby Bear. She is growing, growing, growing, and OUT-growing her infant bibs! I typically like to look on Etsy.com for things for the kids and even for friends or family, because I want to support other stay at home moms, or small business entrepreneurs like myself. I was SO delighted when I found these adorable reversible bibs, AND they were on sale! YUM! I ordered the two bibs you see in the photos, from Amy Rose Designs on March 20th, and I received them in the mail yesterday, March 24th! I was VERY excited to get them so quickly and to see just how CUTE, CUTE, CUTE they are "in person". They are very well made; I know this because I have been sewing since I was 6 years old. The great thing about these bibs too, is that while they are a wee bit big around the neck right now, they will fit Baby Bear for a long time to come! YAY!

...BUT, there's a little more to this story. I didn't realize that the owner of this Etsy shop donates 10% of her proceeds to Antioch Adoptions, a Christian non-profit adoption ministry. Of course, this is something very close to my heart, because we adopted our 2nd child (Little Bear), and we are hoping to adopt our 3rd (Baby Bear, who has been with us since Nov. '09 and is now 6 months old). So, if you feel so inclined, PLEASE shop at Amy Rose Designs, and feel good about knowing that a portion of the sale will help families who are trying to adopt.
Have a blessed day in Christ!

Why Has It Been 2-1/2 Months?

Time flies when you're having fun! Goodness, but it has been a LONG time...and this blog tends to get a bit neglected. I guess that's what happends when it's low on the priority list. Things have changed so much in the past two months!
Our little man, whom we adopted last March, has turned 3 and started special needs preschool. In January, when school starts up again, he will be riding the bus, which is a HUGE thing! I'm praying that he LOVES it, because we are a family of 5, with only one working car. Things get a bit hairy at times!
In October, we got a call from our adoption caseworker, who knows we have been waiting for a little girl. She told us of a baby girl, who at that time wasn't even 2 months old. She asked if we wanted to be considered, knowing very little about the situation, other than the age of birth mom and baby. We of course said YES! We were chosen from a group of 12 families. But then, we went to an AWESOME church retreat, where many of our friends there were sick. As soon as we got home, we got hit HARD with the H1N1 virus. All four of us. So that put off getting to go meet the baby. We were working hard to be patient, and that paid off. As soon as we were all better, we went and met her, and three days later, we got to bring her home!
A week before Thanksgiving, Little Man started his preschool, AND we got Baby Girl....at the same time! YIKES! But God is good, and we were blessed with some time off for the boys and for Papa Bear. And then we were blessed again by being given a couple of weeks of prepared meals by the wonderful ladies in our church.
Then of course, Christmastime was upon us. We have not gotten enough sleep, but we are so grateful for this precious life...especially at Christmas. There is not a 100% guarantee that we will get to keep this baby, and we knew this going into it, but we gave the whole situation to God, and we know He is in control. If we get to keep her, then we will praise Him. If we don't get to keep her, then we will praise Him. He knows what she needs, and knows the desires of our hearts, and He is sovereign. We know that His will will be done, and we are ok with that, no matter the outcome.
So, as we begin the new year, we pray for more sleep, and we pray that God will allow us to be the very best parents we can be to all three of our children. We pray that He increases our faith, and that we grow in Him each day. We know it won't always be easy, but we sure know it will be worth it all in the end, when we get to stand before Him.
I hope you have a blessed New Year!

A Very Special Day
Today is a very special day for the Bear Family. Today is the day that Baby Bear gets to change his last name, and his two middle names! Today is the adoption finalization. We are SO excited, and can't believe that this day has finally arrived. I'm pretty sure Baby Bear and Brother Bear are excited too. Baby Bear woke me up at 5:30 this morning, which is SO unlike him! He normally sleeps in until about 7:30. So I decided to get up with him, figuring that he could get up early and then nap before our court appointment. Fingers crossed...
Brother Bear is also up early. He leaves for school at 7:50, but he was up at just after 6am. He's such a good kid! He gets up and showers on his own. (He's a special needs teen, so sometimes his daily responsibilities get forgotten, or we have to remind him about things on a regular basis.) He fixes his lunch for school. Papa Bear and I must've done something right! This kid is good!
So, at 1:15, we will stand with family and close friends, before a judge who will be granting permission for Baby Bear to legally be our little boy. We have prayed for this for about 3-1/2 years now, and it's here! This whole journey sure didn't come about the way we expected, but God knew what was best, and he brought a little BOY (we had our hearts set on a girl) to our home, and brought with him LOADS of smiles and giggles and wiggles and dancing and just full on laughter at his antics. Thank you Lord, for not always giving us exactly what we want, but instead, what we need.
And yes, we will be taking pictures! I hope to post some next week. No, can't do it tomorrow. Papa Bear is taking me down to Monterey for two whole days! We have gone on a total of 4 dates since Baby Bear made his debut in our home. We have not done any overnights. This time, we have a wonderful Grandma-friend who will be watching the Bear brothers, and Papa Bear and I get to stay at a hotel on the beach, and we get to RELAX! I'm looking forward to not having to "take care" of anyone, and I'm looking forward to just getting to hold hands with Papa Bear, and walk on the beach together, and explore Moss Landing together. YAY!
By the way, it's our engagement anniversary tomorrow! And it's Papa Bear's 40th birthday on Monday, so it's kind of a full circle celebration.
Well, have a GREAT weekend.
God bless,
Mama Bear

We're Adopting!
Some of you may already know, but WE'RE ADOPTING!!!!! Baby Bear will be officially ours on March 12, 2009. He came to us in May of 2008 through our county's foster care system, after 2 years of praying and waiting. We are SOOOO excited!!!! We set the date with the caseworker today. Yes, we will take pictures...yes we will share them on the blog. We would appreciate your prayers as we still need to "raise" the money for the $500 adoption fee. We are praying that God will provide it through my business: www.RioOsoDesigns.com.
Thanks!

A Sweet Love Story -- or "Mr. Wonderful"

Happy Valentine's Day!
Today marks my sixth Valentine's Day with Papa Bear, aka "Mr. Wonderful". I am so blessed that God chose this man for me, and in such a typically "unconventional" way.
I met my husband on eHarmony.com in June of 2003. I had been on eHarmony before, but it was expensive, so I ended my relationship with them. Then a year and a half later, they wanted to kiss and make up, by offering me a whole year for $100, instead of $50 a month, so naturally I accepted. After all, I was living WAY out in the country, commuting to and from work, and away from home for about 11 hours each day. I had a little boy, so I really didn't have time for "dating". Plus, I didn't want to just "date around". I was tired of the games. I wanted a husband. And I knew that was what God wanted for me to, otherwise he wouldn't have given me the desire, right?
So, I hooked back up with eHarmony.com in April of 2003. I had gotten quite a few matches, but after going through them, I was quickly weeding them out. There were a few that got to actual email communication, but not much past that point. There was one that I spoke to on the phone several times, and we even went on a date, because he was actually from the same 100 mile radius as me.
Enter "Michael" from San Ramon, CA. Where on earth is San Ramon? Is that near L.A.? UGH! Well, this probably won't work, because there's now WAY I'm moving to California. That's one of the last places I would want to move!
Unbeknownst to me at the time, Papa Bear had gotten a FREE month of eHarmony for taking some personality test on Tickle.com. We were matched in his 2nd or 3rd week. There was something about his pictureless profile that made me want to find out more about him. There was a question that asked something like this: "Who is the person that you admire the most?" or "Who is the person that has influenced your life the most?". One of those two.
His answer? "Aside from Jesus, it would be my dad....." We don't quite remember what the rest of the answer said....or if that was it. But it piqued my interest. I thought, "Wow! A guy who seems to have a GREAT relationship with his dad!" That's pretty uncommon these days. Usually you will find loads of guys who have good relationships with their moms (and he does!), but not with their dads. My brothers don't. (I didn't have a good relationship with my dad until God changed my heart.)
So I had to find out why. I sent the first contact. I found out later that he wasn't even sure about making contact back. He was a little on the shy side, even though he was on eHarmony!
Well, one thing led to another, and soon we were emailing one another. I was really starting to like this guy. In the meantime, I went on the date with that one guy who lived in my area. We went miniature golfing, and he didn't even let me win! But I was already hoping that it wouldn't work out with us, because I was already starting to fall for Michael. It didn't.
Now, normally I am the one who wears my heart on my sleeve, but I told myself to take it slow...pray...not rush things...pray...take it easy...pray...don't make a fool of myself...
But it was Michael who slipped an "I think I love you" in the middle of a conversation on September 11, 2003. Out of the blue. Like, "WHAT?" I mean, I had been feeling that way, but I wasn't about to say it. And when he said it, I didn't know what to say! I said "Thank you, that's very sweet!" WHAT? That's all I could think of???? Well, I was caught off guard. So I ended up writing him this long letter explaining why I reacted the way I did. Silly me. He hadn't even noticed my weird reaction.
Soon we were talking on the phone every single night. (Before it was only once a month, because he didn't have long distance, and neither did I.) By November, we KNEW that we wanted to get married. We had never even met in person, but we knew. It was just one of those things. I think God gave us all that time together, but apart, so that we could really get to know each other, without things like "physical affection" getting in the way. Trust me, after we met, that was not even an issue! But I think that God really wanted us to get to know each other on a very deep and intimate level. And we did. We talked about everything under the sun, including discipline and parenting, our favorite cereals, money, dreams, etc.
In January of 2004, I had my gall bladder removed. Michael drove out from California in a bad ice and snow storm, so that he could see/meet me and meet my family. He drove about 18 or 19 hours straight! San Ramon is in the SF Bay Area, so he had to drive the full length of CA, PLUS all the way across Arizona and halfway across New Mexico, to where I lived. And I was not at my best...I was still recovering from surgery and from added vertigo.
He was there. There was about 20 minutes of akward tension. Then it was as if we had known each other our entire lives. We fell in love all over again...seeing each other. He loved my family, and my son, and even asked my parents for my hand in marriage. We had a romantic "early" Valentine's Day dinner, complete with steak, baked potatoes, rosemary garlic bread, chocolate covered strawberries, and sparkling cider.
I cried when he left.
I couldn't be gone from him for long. I had to see him again. We made plans for me to fly out to California for a week for his birthday in March. I met his family, took a studio photo with him, and got officially proposed to, all in one day! The next day, we told his family that we were engaged. Their reaction? "That was fast!" What I didn't know, is that, while I had told my parents about him in July of 2003, he didn't tell his parents about me until February of 2004. No wonder they thought it was fast! :-)
I cried, and he cried, when I left.
Well, we planned a wedding, in between two more trips out to CA, including one with Brother Bear so that he could meet the family. We got married in New Mexico on July 17, 2004. He drove out with his mom, dad, sister, grandma, and nephew. His brother and sister-in-law flew out. His groomsmen drove out together. His dad was his best man. My sister was my maid of honor. His sister was one of my bridesmaids. We had a wonderful wedding, of which I don't remember much, except the fact that he gave a ring to my son (who was 10 at the time), signifying that he was now Brother Bear's dad. Everyone cried during that part of the ceremony! We had a quick reception with everyone, and then a small, more intimate BBQ with close friends and family.

We had no honeymoon. We spent one night at a bed and breakfast, and then we moved 1100 miles to California.
I cried.
This was the first time I had ever been this far away from my mom. But I was with my husband, and I loved him, and I still love him. More and more each day.
Why I love Papa Bear:
He loves the Lord with all of his heart, and wants to serve Him in all that he does.
He loves me, and is a good provider.
He loves me, and he makes me laugh.
He loves me, and he loves Brother Bear as if he were his own biological son.
He loves me, and takes care of me when I 'm sick.
He loves me enough to be ok with the fact that, since he taught me to fish, I have caught more fish than he has.
He loves me enough to never yell at me or our children.
He loves me enough to want to live in a small 2BR apartment in order to be 5 minutes away from his work.
He loves me, and his favorite time of the day is at night when we can finally get in bed together and snuggle.
He loves me, and he brings me chocolate!!!!
He loves me, and he works hard at his job, so that we are provided for.
He loves me, loves my family, and loves his family.
He loves me, even though we haven't been able to get pregnant.
He loves me, so we made the decision to adopt, so that we would have more kiddos.
HE LOVES ME, even when I'm PMSing and moody!!!
I love my husband SO much. Thank you God, for giving me such a wonderful man!
Do you have a special Valentine love story? I'd love to hear it.
God bless,
Mama Bear

Adoption Finalization is Just Around the Corner!
We will soon be able to begin counting down to the finalization of the adoption of Baby Bear! Woo Hoo! We are so excited! But there's something that we need to do...we need to raise the adoption fee. It is said that it will cost us between $250 and $500 for the adoption fee. So, I have some wonderful boutique children's clothing that I have made, and I am wanting to sell. If you are interested, you may purchase it right here on the blog! I will be glad to pay shipping on any item that sells. Here is the first item (I will list other items at later times.):

A fun layered twirl skirt with appliqued denim and calico hearts and buttoned "up gathers".
A size 4/5 white tee appliqued with a ruffled denim "pocket".
